India never separated science from philosophy and religion, rather, it viewed all knowledge as part of a whole designed to promote human happiness, health, and growth. According to Ayurveda, the source of all existence is universal Cosmic Consciousness, which manifests as male and female energy.
Purusha, often associated with male energy, is choiceless, passive, pure awareness. Prakriti, the female energy, is associated with active, choiceful consciousness. Both are eternal, timeless, and immeasurable. These energies are present in all living organisms as well as inanimate objects.
The Purusha energy is the subjective principle of consciousness, just as Prakriti is the objective principle of materiality. Together, they are the ultimate, causeless, omnipresent, and all pervasive ground of the universe. When they combine, creation starts and when they get separated, creation comes to an end. According to Ayurveda, the ending of creation is the merging of creation back into its origin or the effect back into its cause (Prakriti).
The soul in living beings reflects Purusha while the body and mind are derived from Prakriti. The highest goal is liberation of the Purusha leading one to a permanent, detached state of the soul which is absolute joy.
Yoga provides the methods to purify the mind in order to bring this about. Ayurveda does not neglect the body and stresses the need to maintain its health, both in terms of prevention and treatment.
